Ocean Shores Terraced Revetment and Geotube
Shore and Dune Protection

In 1996, unexpected extreme erosion occurred along a historically accreting shore (North Jetty Beach at Grays Harbor).  This erosion created an imminent danger for five newly constructed three- and four- storey condominiums along the existing dune.  Private residents of these condominiums created a North Jetty District and retained PI Engineering to design, permit, conduct construction management, and perform post-construction monitoring of the shore erosion project.

An innovative two-tier terraced rock revetment was constructed followed by a two-tiered geotextile tube bulkhead.  The project was designed as a temporary measure and post construction monitoring revealed that the project was successful in stopping the extreme erosion for a period of two years.  Since 2000, the beach has returned to an accretional state and the project is completely covered in sand.

The Coastal Communities (City of Ocean Shores) has supported additional studies to develop a long-term solution to episodic erosion at North Jetty Beach.
